Philip Roth’s stories, “Defender of the Faith” and “Eli, the Fanatic” ask us to consider of what our faith consists. I hope our discussion will approach an understanding of these stories through the lens of our belief and practice. Both of these stories are part of Roth’s award winning book, Goodbye Columbus, a seminal 20th century work addressing the Jewish experience in the post-World War II United States.

Advance reading is helpful, but not required.
