Rituals surrounding death are intensely personal, and deaths in the congregation are always handled by a rabbi. The rabbi meets with the surviving family to discuss the Halacha related to death, burial and mourning, and the needs and wishes of the family. The rabbi will arrange the funeral service and minyans during the week of shiva.
The congregation’s Cemetery Committee arranges burials in the cemetery.
The rabbi arranges for the Beth Jacob Chevre Kadisha to assist in the event of a congregant’s death. Volunteers perform shmira to ensure the deceased is not alone from arrival at the funeral home until burial. Chevre Kadisha trains members who perform tahara, the ritual preparation of a deceased for burial.
